Texas OilMan Legend Dies, 88 Years Old

Clayton Williams, a legendary West Texas oilman, rancher and entrepreneur has died.

Williams, 88, was surrounded by family in Midland when he died Friday of complications from pneumonia, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram.

Often described as the last of the state’s iconic wildcatters, Williams was a larger-than-life figure who loved the spotlight as much as he loved spinning tails peppered with folksy anecdotes.

It was a style that helped get his start brokering oil and gas leases in Fort Stockton in the late 1950s before he started drilling oil wells — hitting enough strikes to become one of the state’s largest, if not the largest, independent oilmen by 1982.
